Hyderabad’s air quality has improved: TSPCB

As per the latest reports, the air quality in Hyderabad has greatly improved in the past few years.

Regardless of how harsh the winter has been, there has been an improvement in the quality of air across the city of Hyderabad in recent years, according to data from the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB).

In January 2021, six areas, including Sanathnagar, ICRISAT, Chikkadpally, Balanagar, and Bolarum, had an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 150 or higher, indicating that pollution in the air was dense enough to cause breathing difficulties for lung and heart patients. However, current data show a significant shift, with only two areas recording AQI levels above 150.

As per the experts, it is natural for pollution levels to rise during the winter due to a process known as “temperature inversion.” This occurs because a layer of warm air sits above the colder air surface, acting as a lid to trap pollutants and allergens. Consider it a pollutant-absorbing blanket that covers the ground in the winter.

Current winter season’s AQI levels in the city are better than last two years

Balanagar, an industrial area, had 182 pollution levels in January 2019. The same figure was recorded this year at 139. Sanathnagar, another industrial area, has also seen significant improvement in pollution levels. Sanathnagar’s AQI dropped from 211 in January 2019 to 141 in January 2022.

Most importantly, the city’s major residential areas have a good Air Quality Index. The AQI in areas such as Jubilee Hills, Paradise, Madhapur, Sainikpuri, and Abids has dropped to acceptable levels. During January of this year, Sainikpuri and the area surrounding KBR Park had the best AQI in the city, with readings of 75 and 76, respectively.

Summer will see even more improvement

As the temperature rises in the coming months, it is expected that air quality will improve in most areas of the city. According to TSPCB reports from last year, the AQI level in most localities in Hyderabad is less than 50, indicating good air quality during the summer and monsoon months.
