High Rate of Heart Attack’s During Winter

There are several reasons why heart attacks are more common during the winter months. The major risk factor is related to body blood vessels. During the cold weather blood vessels in the human body constrict. This raises blood pressure, which increases the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. If the person has coronary heart disease, the cold may also cause the coronary arteries to constrict. In addition, because the body loses heat more easily when the temperature outside drops, the heart has to work even harder during the winter to pump blood and maintain body heat.

Simultaneously, lifestyle changes can have an impact on the onset of heart attacks. The holiday season is typically associated with an increase in sedentary lifestyles, with most of us spending more time at home and less time engaging in physical activities outside.

People with the following comorbidities may be at a higher risk of heart attack, especially during the winter:

  • Previous heart problems
  • heart attack in the past
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Addiction to tobacco
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
