Justice P. Velmurugan of the Madras High Court expressed his deep anguish over the Anna University sexual assault case on Thursday, calling for introspection on societal subjugation of women and denouncing the politicization of the incident.
Speaking during a court session, Justice Velmurugan lamented that the case, instead of serving as a wake-up call to address systemic gender discrimination and violence, was being exploited for political gain. His comments came after Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) advocate K. Balu mentioned the denial of police permission for a protest organized by the party’s women’s wing.
The Judge criticized political protests over the issue, stating that such actions were often aimed at garnering media attention rather than expressing genuine concern for the victim. Justice Velmurugan also took the media to task, accusing news channels of conducting a “media trial” since the incident came to light last month. “I’m not saying that media should not report on the issue, but definitely not the way in which they are doing,” he said, stressing the need for responsible journalism.

Expressing his anguish not only as a Judge but as a human being, Justice Velmurugan made a poignant statement: “I’m ashamed to live in this era when discrimination based on gender, caste, and so on continues. All of us should be ashamed. Strictly speaking, we all are co-accused in such crimes.”
The case, which has drawn national attention, has also sparked criticism from various quarters. Former Anna University Vice-Chancellor and the National Commission for Women (NCW) have voiced concerns, urging swift action to ensure justice. Meanwhile, political parties, including the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK, have exchanged sharp criticisms over the handling of the case.
As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe, Justice Velmurugan’s remarks serve as a reminder of the urgent need to focus on justice for the victim and address the systemic issues that perpetuate gender-based violence.
