Madras High Court Directs State Government Against Manual Scavenging

In the latest update, the Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to take up harsh measures to eradicate the practice of manual scavenging in the state. The court was responding to the hearing filed by the Safari Karmachari Andolan who was seeking to increase the compensation paid to the deaths while doing the same.

Court Directs Government To Prepare A Status Report 

The first bench of the Madras High Court comprising Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P.D. Adikesvalu called upon the state government on Wednesday to put together harsh measures as a deterrent in opposition to people who are the perpetrators of manual scavenging.

The court directed the state government to produce a status record within 4 weeks and additionally wanted the government to conduct a proper enumeration of those who are worried in manual scavenging jobs.

The propose for the petitioners Srinath Sridevan said that at the same time as the state authorities asked for the wide variety of guide scavengers at 464, according to the petitioners it’d be properly above 3000 within the country.

The first bench of the Madras High Court agreed with the endorsement representing the petitioners, Safai Karmachari Andolan that heavy compensation is given to folks that die at the same time as conducting manual scavenging.

The petitioners had asked the court to increase the repayment amount because of loss of life whilst conducting manual scavenging from Rs 10 lakh at present to no less than Rs 50 lakh.

The judges directed the state government pleader, P. Muthukumar to get instructions regarding this matter.

Awareness Against Manual Scavenging

The court has further directed the state government to ensure that there is proper awareness given to the people engaged in the manual scavenging. They further asked them to take initiative to rehabilitate them.

The counsel for Safar Karamchari Andolan has claimed that since the filing of the case in 2017, around 42 people have died. He further requested the court to give directions to the state government to provide employment to the dependents of the ones who had died during manual scavenging.
