Netflix and chill- Company plansto offer free subscription for a weekend

How does a free subscription to Netflix sound? For a whole weekend, Netflix has plans underway to provide a free trial version of the streaming service to potential subscribers.

According to the Chief Product Officer of Netflix, Greg Peters, the company will kickstart the offer with India, followed by the rest of the countries after a certain time. The big plans were announced over a call on 20th October concerned with the business house’s profits for the third quarter.

Currently, Netflix offers a free 30-day trial period to all new users, although it had withdrawn its service for Indians a while back as it was getting exploited. The offer is now back on its platform and is valid for every new card sign up.

The US, however, has been removed from the trial version earlier this month by the California-based company and viewers have to pay for watching any series or movie on the streaming platform. Some others too, still have the offer ongoing, while few others have the paid service only.

During the interview, Mr. Peters explained that the newly planned trial formed “an example of the kind of innovation” the company has thought of. He referred to it as “an idea” for familiarizing the platform and the various shows it offers to people who aren’t aware of it. This way, a free weekend’s promotion can lead to many new users paying for the full version of the service to continue watching the series.

The interview hosted with Barclay’s media analyst Kannan Venkateshwar had Mr. Peters said, “[W]e think that giving everyone in-country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service, how the service works, really create an event, and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up.”

As the details aren’t disclosed yet, it is uncertain as to whether the 30-day free trial will continue to be available for Indian viewers or will be withdrawn after the new plan’s introduction.

“We’re always looking at different marketing promotions to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience,” NDTV quoted a Netflix representative.

With Netflix offering different sorts of promotional activities and services in different countries according to the viewers’ interests in each region, it isn’t very probable for the company to launch the new plan globally to every country.

This year, however, with other OTT platforms gaining momentum, Netflix had tough competition to face. Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and Zee 5 among the major streaming apps did not let Netflix expand its growth to the extent the company had expected.
