Nizam College Students Protest Water Shortage and Facilities, Demand Action

Nizam College students took to the streets to voice their dissatisfaction with the lack of facilities, particularly the water supply, in the girls’ hostels. The students expressed frustration with the government and college authorities, citing a history of resistance that led to their accommodation in the hostels a year ago. However, they now find themselves in hostels plagued by various problems.

Highlighting their grievances, the students mentioned the inadequate quality and quantity of food and a severe water crisis that has persisted for the last five months. Despite numerous complaints to the principal, warden, and other authorities, their issues have been consistently ignored. The students decided to skip classes and stage a protest to draw attention to the deteriorating conditions in Nizam College.

The protesters emphasized that the college, which once played a crucial role in Telangana, is now losing its legacy. They pointed out that the administration often shifts blame onto the government and scholarship issues when questioned about broader problems within the college. Additionally, the students revealed that despite spending Rs 1 lakh on motor repairs recently, the water issue remains unresolved, forcing them to endure days without water for drinking and bathing.

The challenges extend beyond the hostel, with students from various social backgrounds struggling to afford exam fees. Many girls are compelled to move to private hostels with higher fees to maintain menstrual hygiene. Speaking on behalf of the students, protest organizer Saraswathi asserted that they don’t want excuses; they want tangible solutions and facilities.

The students made it clear that the agitation would persist until the principal provided clear assurances regarding their raised concerns. The protest caused disruptions in traffic, leading to the intervention of Abids police, who took some participating students into custody to restore normalcy in the area.
