New Delhi: A Delhi court has ordered the Tihar Jail officials to give security to ex-Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid in the prison premises after he was sent to 14-days judicial custody regarding a case identifying with the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February.
Khalid was taken into custody by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police department on October 1 and sent to three-day police custody. On October 4, his police custody ended after which he was remanded to legal judicial custody at Tihar prison.
Umar Khalid counsel, Rakshanda Deka and Sanya Kumar registered an application under the watchful eye of the court looking for security for their client, consent to wear spectacles, leave prison cell, accessibility of books, and reading material.
Dev Saroha, the Metropolitan Magistrate of Tihar court complex stated on the matter: “I am of the opinion that the accused should be provided with these facilities as per relevant rules. In view of the same concerned Jail Supdt. is hereby directed to provide adequate security to the accused taking proper precautions that no harm should be caused and to provide the other facilities asked for by the accused.”
On 13th of September, he was taken into custody under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for another case identified with the riots and is charged for producing a criminal conspiracy to cause public distress by encouraging individuals to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.
He is now in judicial custody regarding this case, as well. The riots had left 53 individuals dead and 748 wounded.
