Delhi riots: Umar Khalid sent to legal authority till Oct 22

A Delhi court on Thursday sent past Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid, taken into custody regarding a case related to the widespread violence which broke out in Delhi’s North-East territory in February, to judicial custody until October 22.

Delhi Police’s Special Cell had taken him into custody on September 13 night under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, following which he was sent to 10 days in police custody. He was produced under the steady gaze of Additional Session Judge Amitabh Rawat of Karkardooma court through video-conferencing prior in the day towards the end of the remand time frame.

On the appeal of Umar Khalid and his counsel Trideep Pais, the court permitted him to meet his family before going to prison and guided his counsel to move an application for giving him spectacles. Advocate Pais will likewise move an application mentioning the court to give him security.

In the last 10 days in police custody, I have not signed any paper or statement, Umar Khalid educated the court during the video conferencing.

He is charged creating a criminal conspiracy to cause communal agitation by inciting individuals protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens.

On March 6, the FIR was filed against Khalid and one Danish dependent on data gave by an informer to Crime Branch Sub-Inspector Arvind Kumar.

As indicated by FIR number 59/2020, complainant Sub-Inspector Arvind Kumar said that riots are a planned conspiracy. The conspiracy was hatched by Umar Khalid and two others associated with different organisations, the FIR stated further.

Umar Khalid gave provocative discourses at two separate places and requested individuals to block the streets during US President Donald Trump’s visit, to expand propaganda at the global level about how minorities in India were being persecuted, the FIR included.
