No signs of progress on proposed TS Islamic Cultural Center five years later

The establishment of an Islamic Cultural Center in Kokapet was announced by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao in 2017. The budget for 2020-21 included Rs. 40 crores for construction.

However, it appears to be a distant dream for the time being. The government’s announcements about the development and welfare of Muslims in the state have proven to be merely just ear-pleasing as the government has not implemented any of its plans, nor have the Muslims been asked to do so.

Despite budget approval, the Islamic Cultural Center’s foundation stone has yet to be laid. On the other hand, Shivlal Banjara Bhawan and Adivasi Bhawan were inaugurated after their construction, and both Bhawans were built on very valuable land in Banjara Hills with a cost of crores of rupees.

The government also held a foundation stone ceremony on Monday for the construction of the Christian Bhavan in Uppal, but there is no sign of progress on the proposed Islamic Cultural Centre. The Christian community, which is part of the Minority Welfare Department, was given 12 acres of land in Uppal worth 70 crores, and the foundation stone for Christian Bhavan was laid.

In 2017, Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao announced a special IT radar for Muslim youth, as well as the provision of land for the development of commercial affairs and the establishment of industries, but neither of these initiatives was carried out.

Promised 10% quota for Muslims in 2BHK scheme

Sudhir Commission was established soon after the foundation of Telangana state to analyze the social, economic, and educational backwardness of Muslims. Following a thorough assessment, the Commission issued a full report to the government on August 12, 2016, along with a number of recommendations.

According to the survey, 43 percent of the Muslim population in the state lives in rented housing. It was suggested to the government that it seriously consider it, and the government promised to implement a 10% quota for Muslims in the allocation of double-bedroom houses. However, Muslims felt discriminated against in the distribution of houses in the state.

The District Collectors have been directed to pick eligible and deserving people in a transparent manner for the distribution of double-bedroom houses by January 15, 2023. Beneficiaries were also given double-bedroom houses in several districts and assembly districts. But as per the promise, the 10% quota was not implemented, causing a significant hardship for poor Muslims.

The government is building approximately 300,000 double-bedroom houses in Telangana, in which Muslims should receive approximately 30,000 houses under the 10% quota. However, till now, only roughly 1000 Muslims have been granted ownership of 2BHK. The government should respond to this. A special arrangement should be developed to monitor the injustice that has been done in the allocation of double-bedroom houses to Muslims.
