Onset of North East Monsoon observed in Tamil Nadu and Kerala

The Indian Meteorological Department has announced the onset of the North East Monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala. This development is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin, leading to strengthened northeasterly winds over the South and Central Bay of Bengal, extending into middle tropospheric levels. The commencement of the Northeast Monsoon in the region is a direct result of these weather phenomena.

Simultaneously, the depression over the Arabian Sea has evolved into Cyclone ‘Tej’ and is expected to escalate into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ within the next 36 hours. Projections indicate its course towards the Yemen-Oman coasts around October 25. In the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is anticipated to intensify into a depression by Sunday, with a likely trajectory toward Bangladesh.

S Balachandran, the Southern Regional Head of the IMD, cautioned fishermen against venturing into the Arabian Sea until October 25 and the Bay of Bengal until October 26. Deep-sea fishermen have been strongly advised to return to shore.

Balachandran highlighted the likelihood of heavy rainfall in one or two places over Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari in the next 24 hours. Despite the onset of the North East Monsoon, the initial phase is expected to be relatively weak, with Balachandran stating that for the next 5-6 days, the rains may not be intensely widespread.
