Police bust birth certificate racket in Hyderabad, five arrested

The SR Nagar police arrested five people, including a GHMC contract employee, on the charges of fraudulently issuing birth certificates. They were taken into custody by police with fabricated documents, six mobile phones, and Rs.19,400.

Akula Satish (36), a contract employee working in the GHMC Khairatabad circle, Mohd Rasool (42), Syed Hussain Iqbal (49), Arif Ahmed (56) and Mohd Rasheed (43), all brokers, were arrested. Aziz Kasim, an assistant health officer with GHMC Circle 7, and Ankit were absconding.

Joel Davis, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone), stated that assistant health officer Kasim had formed a gang and had been authorising the fake certificates for a long time.

Investigators had discovered that the gang had issued over 163 of these certificates in the previous few months alone.

DCP (West) Joel Davis said that the main suspect Kasim along with the assistance of Satish were issuing birth certificates to brokers for a fee of over Rs.1,000 per certificate.

According to the procedure, an applicant must go to the GHMC Citizen Service Centre and apply for the certificate. After the details are verified, the certificate is uploaded to the GHMC records, and the applicant must collect the certificate from a Mee Seva centre, which usually takes about 15 days.

Kasim and Satish collected applications from brokers directly, prepared certificates, and issued them to applicants within a day. Not only did they violate established procedures, but in some cases,  they issued certificates with dates dictated by brokers rather than the original date of birth.

Satish even used to obtain the details of the applicants (date of birth and parents’ names) through WhatsApp, evaded the necessary procedures, used Kasim’s digital signature, and issued genuine certificates for a fee of Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,500.
