Police Issue Advisory to Prevent Burglaries During Sankranti

With the festive season of Sankranti approaching, Cyberabad police have issued an advisory urging citizens to adopt safety measures to prevent house burglaries. As many families prepare to leave the city for celebrations, criminals often exploit this opportunity to target locked houses.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty highlighted the increased risk of property offences during the festive season, particularly as schools remain closed and families travel to their native places. “It is better to inform the local police station about your departure and arrival plans if you need to lock your house,” he advised.

The police emphasized the importance of using advanced security measures, such as installing locks with central locking systems and security alarm systems equipped with motion sensors. Commissioner Mohanty also recommended installing CCTV cameras at entry and exit points and ensuring that the DVR is stored securely.

To give the appearance of occupancy, the Commissioner suggested keeping some lights on inside and outside the house, covering locked doors with curtains, and avoiding visible signs of absence such as uncollected garbage, milk packets, or newspapers.

In addition to these measures, residents were advised to:

  • Keep two-wheelers locked and inside the compound, preferably secured with wheel chains.
  • Hire trusted security guards or watchmen.
  • Inform trusted neighbors about their absence and request them to monitor the house.
  • Avoid leaving spare keys in easily accessible spots like shoe racks, under pillows, or above cupboards.

Commissioner Mohanty also cautioned against sharing travel plans publicly, especially on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Facebook. “Do not disclose your travel details to anyone except trusted individuals,” he stressed.

The police encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the local police station or by calling emergency numbers. Residents can contact the toll-free number 100, the Cyberabad Police Control Room at 9490617100, or send a message via WhatsApp to 9490617444.

By taking these precautions, the Cyberabad police aim to ensure a safe and secure Sankranti for all residents. Commissioner Mohanty concluded, “Together, we can prevent property offences and ensure the safety of our communities during this festive season.”
