Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi join farmers protest against farm laws in Delhi

Congress former party chief Rahul Gandhi and current General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi joined a protest march on Friday in Delhi to show solidarity with the farmers protesting against the farm laws. They marched towards Raj Niwas which houses the residence and office of Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor. Thereafter, both the Congress leaders went to Jantar Mantar and joined the ongoing protest of the Punjab MPs against the contentious farm laws.

Taking a jibe at Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi said that the Prime Minister has not respected the farmers and declared that the Congress party is with the farmers to support them till these laws are withdrawn. Slamming BJP, the Congress leader alleged that the government is working for corporates and these laws are not in favor of the farmers.

Congress has been opposing the farm laws for quite some time. The laws were even passed in the Parliament after Congress MPs were suspended.

On Friday, Congress held protests at all Raj Bhavans (Governor’s House) across the country and demanded the withdrawal of the farm laws. Congress had called to protest outside the Governor’s houses against the farm laws in every state. In Delhi also Congress took out a march against the contentious farm laws.

The party has been supporting the farmers’ unions who are demanding the repeal of the laws by the Centre and have been on the streets near the Delhi borders for more than 50 days.

However, as the Congress workers marched towards LG House, they were stopped midway by the police. The face-off between the police and Congress workers has been reported from other places as well as party workers tried to reach the Raj Bhavans.

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress’ state president Ajay Kumar Lallu and many Congress workers were detained on Friday as they attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan to observe ‘Kisan Adhikar Diwas’. The state party president alleged that the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh was infringing on their democratic right to hold a peaceful protest and stated that the Congress party will continue to fight against such oppression.

Farmers’ protest against the three farm laws has been continuing in the country since September 2020. Despite multiple rounds of talks between the government and farmers, no headway has yet been made. Recently, the Supreme court of India also expressed its disappointment in the situation and slammed the Centre.
