Student Injured as Ceiling Plaster Collapses in Osmania University Hostel, Protests Erupt

A student at Osmania University was injured on Tuesday after a portion of the ceiling plaster in the Main Technology Hostel washroom collapsed. The incident occurred in the morning, leaving K Naveen, a final-year Food Technology student, with injuries to his head and back.

Following the incident, students launched protests on campus, blocking the main road and demanding safety and better facilities in university hostels. The campus had already been witnessing demonstrations against the administration’s recent circular banning protests, and this incident further intensified student unrest.

The injured student, K Naveen, was immediately provided with first aid and a tetanus injection. Recalling the incident, he said, “I was using the washroom when small portions of the ceiling suddenly started falling. I managed to escape, but some of it hit my back and head, causing injuries and severe pain.”

Students claimed that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred. In July last year, a section of the boys’ hostel ceiling collapsed due to continuous rain. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the incident happened late at night, but students were left shaken by the sudden collapse.

According to students, the hostel building was constructed in the 1960s and currently houses over 300 students, exceeding its original capacity. They alleged that the building lacks proper maintenance and that repeated pleas for improvements have gone unheard.

Nanda Kishore, a final-year technology student, voiced his frustration, stating, “We have submitted at least 50 complaints regarding the poor living conditions in the hostel. When we approached the Vice-Chancellor, he said the college is autonomous and must handle the issue, while college officials claim they lack funds. The hostel remains in the same condition as when I joined three years ago. We don’t know who to approach for a solution.”

Students have urged the university administration to take immediate action to repair the hostel and provide necessary facilities. As protests continue to escalate, all eyes are on the administration to see how they respond to the growing concerns of the students.
