Surge in Cybercrime Cases in Cyberabad, Telangana, Raises Concerns

The Cyberabad commissionerate zone saw a significant increase in cybercrime cases in 2023, with the police registering a total of 5342 cases. Victims of these crimes jointly lost Rs 232.34 crore as a result of fraudulent actions. This is a significant increase from the 4850 cases reported the previous year.

Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty blamed the surge in cybercrime on the growing usage of the internet by all segments of society. To fight this growing threat, he asked victims of cybercrime to call the cybercrime helpline at 1930. Mohanty further recommended people to be cautious and avoid responding to calls, messages, or emails from unfamiliar sources.

Despite the police’s best efforts, the detection rate of cybercrime crimes remains a source of concern. According to a Cybercrime police official, cybercriminals operate globally, making it difficult to catch them in comparison to traditional crimes where tangible clues are more readily available.

One of the key cases in 2023 featured the arrest of six men from New Delhi who were involved in loan fraud. The culprits were apprehended by the police with Rs. 41.23 lakh in cash. Furthermore, the Cyberabad police worked with multiple financial institutions to freeze Rs. 46 crores that cyber fraudsters had illegally transferred to bank accounts.

While discussing the overall crime scenario in Cyberabad, officials highlighted a 14% increase in the crime rate during 2023, which they attributed to population expansion in the area. In 2023, 29,156 cases were reported in the region, up from 27,322 the previous year. Authorities remain watchful in their efforts to combat cybercrime and safeguard the safety of Cyberabad commissionerate zone inhabitants.
