Telangana: 7 hurt in blast at power plant

In an explosion at the Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant (KTPP) at Chelpur village in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district on Monday night, seven workers were hurt, three of them severely.

A firefighting operation was immediately launched by the staff involved to douse the blaze.

Circle Inspector Venkat told Siasat.com that of the seven injured, one is on a ventilator and has received 85% burns, two received 45-50% burns, and the rest of the victims suffered simple burn injuries.

The three employees – one on a ventilator and the other two with nearly 50% burns – are admitted to Yashoda Hospital while the remaining four are admitted to Ajara Hospital in the ICU department.

Three of the victims admitted to Yashoda hospitals were Venkateswarlu, Sitaramulu, and Veerasham

“The fire was accidental. When the blast occurred, the mill workers were repairing the plant. As of yet, no FIR has been filed,” Circle Inspector Venkat said.

Fire officials call for fire safety measures

According to firefighters, this is the time of year when people should dispose of waste combustible material lying around their houses and properties. Besides this, they should also check the electrical wiring, appliances, and switchboards.

V Papaiah, Regional Fire Officer, said combustible materials such as paper, cloth, wood, paints, LPG cylinders, and plastic are usually stocked in buildings, posing a higher risk.

Many multi-story buildings have a high ‘fire load’, meaning there is a lot of wooden property in the form of furniture, furnishings, and other combustible materials.

The equipment such as fire extinguishers, heat detectors, and fire hydrant pipelines should be thoroughly examined by a professional, if necessary, in order to avoid failure when it is needed most.

The training of security personnel in firefighting techniques is vital as they play a crucial role in containing the fire at the initial stage. Furthermore, emergency exits should be kept free of blockages such as furniture, papers, or other objects that prevent people in case of a fire from escaping quickly.
