Telangana: Monsoon begins to retreat from State

The monsoon rains have begun to retreat from the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating that the system had begun to withdraw from parts of Telangana on Friday.

The normal date for the withdrawal from the state was October 15. The withdrawal of the Southwest monsoon was based on meteorological conditions such as a five-day continuous cessation of rainfall activity over the area, the formation of an anticyclone in the lower troposphere (850 hPa and below), and water vapor imagery indicating dry weather conditions over the region.

Typically, IMD considers September 30 to be the last day of southwest monsoon rain over the country, and rain after that is considered post-monsoon rainfall.

From June 1 to September 21, the state received 1215.2 mm of rain, compared to the normal of 803.1 mm, while the state capital received 874.5 mm, compared to the normal of 656.2 mm.

With the end of the rainy season, Hyderabad may begin to feel a chill in the air, and nights may soon become colder. The minimum temperature is expected to range between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

The city typically experiences mild winters from November to January, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS). In January 2015, the lowest minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius was recorded at Marredpally.

“The lowest minimum temperatures are observed mainly over north and northeast districts of the State and south and southeast districts are warmer during the season,” the Weather Department stated in a report.

The north zone bore the brunt of monsoon fury, with areas such as Quthbullapur and Kapra receiving significant excess rainfall. According to TSDPS data, while Rajendranagar and other areas experienced large excess downpour, Musheerabad is the only area that has experienced normal rainfall since the start of the monsoon.
