Telangana Poll: Welfare Schemes Take Center Stage in Political Battle

Political parties in Telangana are gearing up for the upcoming Assembly elections, with the focus squarely on welfare schemes. The ruling BRS government is actively implementing a range of such programs, while the opposition parties are vying to introduce new ones.

Recently, the Congress, the main opposition, unveiled a package of six Welfare Schemes guarantees aimed at countering the BRS government’s welfare initiatives. Surprisingly, despite criticizing the ruling parties for driving their states into debt with welfare schemes, these opposition parties are now promising their own schemes to win public favor.

The Congress pledges to provide a 250 square yard house site to Telangana activists, offer a housing grant of Rs 5 lakh, a monthly old age pension of Rs 4,000, and health insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh. While the Congress accuses the BRS of failing to fulfill its election promises, the BRS is actively countering the Congress’s welfare plans.

The BRS argues that the state’s budget will not suffice to implement the Congress’s proposed schemes. It seems that for these political parties, the primary objective is to attract voters, with financial feasibility taking a back seat. The Congress believes that its success in recent Karnataka elections was largely due to its welfare scheme announcements, and it is now replicating this strategy in Telangana.

In this electoral battle, the BRS claims that a victory would ensure the continuity of its social welfare programs, including Dalit Bandhu. They are banking on the popularity of these initiatives for a hat-trick victory.

The Congress, on the other hand, aims to challenge the BRS with its own set of welfare schemes. The BRS asserts that its welfare programs have reached every household in the state and doubts whether people will trust Congress’s promises. The upcoming Telangana Assembly elections are shaping up to be a battle between the BRS and the Congress, with both parties using welfare schemes as their primary weapons to win voters’ support.
