Telangana stands in third place in the country in healthcare sector: Harish Rao

Health Minister T Harish Rao said on Thursday the State stood in third place in the country in the healthcare sector.

While laying the foundation for a 100-bed hospital in Yadagirigutta, he stated that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is working on a mission to make quality healthcare services available to the poor across the state. He stated that the 100-bed hospital at Yadagirigutta would provide medical services to locals as well as devotees from various locations.

The Minister noted that there were only three medical colleges in Telangana in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, but that the number of medical colleges had now increased to 26 following the formation of a separate Telangana State.

Telangana topped in medical education in the country as well, he added, noting that the number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges was increased from 850 to 2915. Similarly, the State ranked second in postgraduation in medicine courses, with PG medical seats increasing from 515 to 1208 after the formation of the State.

The number of MBBS seats in private colleges had increased to 6715, and the number of PG seats had increased to 2548. In addition to medical colleges, he said, nursing colleges would be established in the state, strengthening Telangana’s medical education infrastructure.

Harish Rao detailed how the state government’s measures improved the quality of healthcare services in government hospitals, saying the number of beds with oxygen facilities in government hospitals increased to 27,966 from 1400 before 2014. The health sector was given top priority by the Chief Minister, who allocated Rs.12,161 crores in the State budget, he said.

Highlighting that Telangana alone had 33 palliative care centres, the rest of the States put together had only 168 palliative care centres.  The number of dialysis centres has also been increased from three in 2014 to 104 by 2023. Due to KCR Kits and Nutrition Kits being distributed to pregnant women, the Infant mortality rate came down to 21 from 39.

Institutional deliveries in government-run hospitals increased from 30.05 percent to 61 percent. More Basthi Dawakhanas were also being established across the State to bring medical services closer to the people and make them more accessible, he said.

He said the State government was setting up super specialty hospitals with 4,200 beds around Hyderabad spending Rs 2,679 crores, while another 2,000 beds would be made available in NIMS.

Earlier, the Health Minister attended a puja at the Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple. Government whip Gongidi Sunitha and Zilla Parishad chairman A Sandeep Reddy were also present.
