Hyderabad: Fire department holds fire safety meeting ahead of summer

The Director General of Telangana state disaster response and fire services Nagi Reddy convened a review meeting on Wednesday to discuss ensuring fire prevention and safety measures in hazardous industries, chemical and scrap godowns etc.

The meeting, held in anticipation of the upcoming summer, discussed an action plan to ensure fire safety in areas prone to fire accidents such as Jeedimetla, Balanagar, Rajendra Nagar, and Katadan.

Officials at the meeting decided that combined inspections by the police and fire departments would begin on Thursday. It was decided that inspections would take two weeks. They decided that the checklist would be completed and an appropriate notice/advice on fire prevention and safety measures in accordance with NBC standards would be issued on the spot.

The suggested basic fire safety measures must be implemented within two weeks.

It was decided that areas/clusters would be identified and a list of premises visited would be mapped on GIS, with a special emphasis on smaller, unorganised establishments.

Employees and workers will be educated on fire prevention measures and good practises, as well as the SOPs recommended for the specific material handled, in order to avoid fire incidents.

Local fire stations will be used as training centres for basic fire protection and fighting techniques. In the storage and/or handling units godowns/industries, a Material Safety Data Sheet or a list of chemicals/materials and quantities handled should be displayed.

Workers/labor shall not be permitted to reside, cook in the same premises. No premises should be locked from the outside while people are inside. According to officials, storage will be kept to a minimum during the summer season, with no stock exceeding 60% capacity.

The GPS of Fire Department appliances will be synchronised with Traffic ITMS to obtain a Green Channel, and the police and fire departments will coordinate with the water board for water supply during incidents, including those that occur at odd hours of the night.
