The GHMC plans to finish the SNDP project before the monsoon arrives

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has accelerated the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) operations in preparation for the monsoon, with aims to complete them before the rains arrive. Senior engineers in all GHMC zones were asked to meet the deadline without fail as part of the exercise.

GHMC officials were recently told by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao to begin monsoon-related work in February rather than waiting until the rains arrived, after which the work was accelerated.

The city’s stormwater drain network is being renovated at a cost of Rs 858.32 crore in the first phase of the SNDP to solve the issue of urban floods. Under the SNDP, a total of 60 works were proposed, with 37 of them falling inside the GHMC boundaries. The remaining projects were proposed in the municipalities and municipal corporations surrounding GHMC.

“Works are proceeding at a quick pace in 26 areas within GHMC bounds, and the tender procedure for the remaining works will be finished before the end of this month,” GHMC said in a news release.

Hyderabad: cab drivers annoyed by cab drivers from other states

Ola and Uber are hiring vehicles from Maharashtra and Karnataka, which is breaking the law, according to Telangana cabbies.

Hundreds of cabs from neighbouring states that entered Telangana on a minimal MV Tax at the border have conveniently failed to return, violating standards such as vehicle permits. Some of the vehicles are now tied to taxi aggregators due to a lack of a mechanism for identifying them.

A number of such automobiles and cabs have been spotted on city roads in recent months, according to drivers’ associations. These unauthorised automobiles exacerbate the already intense competitiveness within the city borders. Despite the fact that traffic officials have begun cracking down on cars that are not registered inside the GHMC limits, a decision on cabs has yet to be made.

Local cabbies on the roadways discovered at least 350 cabs that were not registered in Telangana. We support the idea of city cops fining cars from outside the city, but they should also apply to taxis.” We discovered that a lot of vehicles with Karnataka and Maharashtra licence plates are operating in Hyderabad and that they are, strangely, affiliated with cab aggregators like Ola and Uber. According to Shaik Salauddin, head of the Telangana Taxi and Driver JAC, authorities should act and limit their disruptive and invasive behaviour.”

Thousands of cabbies have already been forced to leave the trade and seek other odd jobs as a result of the pandemic. The number of cabs on city roads was 1.2 lakh before the outbreak. Due to a variety of factors, including the WFH (Work from Home) model of IT businesses and an increase in private vehicles, this number has now dropped to 60,000.

A V Ranganath, Joint Commissioner (Traffic), who recently asked officers to regulate the movement of automobiles from other districts in the city, told Express that cabs from other States should not be permitted to operate here.
