This move comes after both Facebook and Twitter received a lot of backlash for banning the accounts of Former US President Donald Trump during the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. In their justifications, they said that it was done as Trump was being accused of further instigating the riots in the area.

Facebook has reportedly asked the independent Oversight Board if the ban on Trump should continue for any longer. At the same time, Twitter also seeks public opinion on what action would be appropriate if a world leader violates a rule.

In a blogpost, Twitter said that politicians and government officials all across the world have constantly evolved in the ways they use their services. At the same time, they also want the platform’s policies to be maintained and followed along with the changing political discourse and maintain healthy public conversations.

Following this, they want to know the opinions of the public on how to approach world leaders in situations like that. The survey will be closed on April 12. Twitter also said that they will also be consulting human rights experts, academics, and civil society organizations across the globe to understand the feedback and the changes that need to be made in future policies.

Twitter Is Known For Labelling Tweets And Curbing Misleading Information

During the lockdown period across the world, there was a sudden rise of fake news across social media platforms. To deal with the same, Twitter started to label tweets or remove them if they had misleading information about the pandemic. They also inserted links to the World Health Organisation for any further information about the coronavirus and guidelines that need to be followed. The same is being followed for the information about Covid 19 vaccines as well.

They said in a statement that ever since the Covid 19 guidelines were issued, they had removed over 8400 tweets and challenged 11.5 million accounts worldwide.
