Type O, Rh- Blood May be Linked to Lower COVID-19 Risks: Researchers

Toronto: Having O and rhesus-negative or Rh-, blood was linked with a slightly lower risk for COVID-19 infection and serious illness or death, as per researchers.

For the outcomes, issued in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, the research group analysed 225,556 individuals who tested their blood type from January 2007 to December 2019, and who later had a COVID-19 lab test.

Study authors from the University of Toronto in Canada said that our goal was to determine whether ABO and Rh blood groups could be associated with a risk for acquiring a SARS-CoV-2 infection and developing a severe COVID-19 illness.

As per the study, out of the more than 200,000 tests that were analysed, 1,328 of them were diagnosed with severe COVID-19 illness or death, with higher probabilities amongst AB and B blood types, just as the individuals who were Rh-positive.

Their discoveries show that O and Rh-negative blood bunches were related with a slightly lower risk for SARS-CoV-2 disease just as severe COVID-19 illness or death.

The authors wrote that even though they saw a statistically important connection between blood type and severe disease or death, it was also assumed that they had correctly identified severe illness associated with COVID-19.

The research group presently wonder over whether comparable differences in blood type will be seen within ongoing medical trials studying the therapeutic efficiency of SARS-CoV-2 immunotherapy or vaccination.

The researchers stated that a small proportion of SARS-CoV-2 infection or related illness in the complete population could be restricted by some undetermined property conferred by O blood type and, perhaps, additionally enhanced by Rh- status.

They added that whether this information can influence Covid-19 prevention or treatment strategies remains to be determined

Prior, another study issued in h previous month in the journal Blood Advances indicated that blood bunch O is related to a decreased danger for contracting SARS-CoV-2 disease.
