Uttam writes to CM KCR demanding relief for submerged Osman Nagar residents

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President & MP  N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday urged Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao to extend immediate relief to the residents of Osman Nagar, Saif Nagar, Abdullah Yehya Nagar and other localities which are still submerged in floodwaters.

Uttam, in an open letter to the Chief Ministers, said that the residences of Osman Nagar and other areas were living in miserable conditions as their houses remained submerged in rain water for the last two months. He said more than 5,000 people of nearly 1,000 families of three colonies were forced to live on streets under open-sky as they could not return to their submerged houses. He said several areas under the Jalpally Municipality of Ranga Reddy district under Maheshwaram Assembly constituencies were still underwater and no efforts have been made by the authorities to remove the floodwaters.

The TPCC Chief said that almost all residents belong to the middle class and they suffered huge losses due to the submergence of their houses. They lost food items, documents, electronic items, fridge, computers, school books, furniture, and everything else. He said those people have constructed their houses with their hard-earned money and most of them have purchased the consumers’ goods in installments. He said small children, elderly people, and others have no access to proper food or medicines for the last two months. He said that the stagnation of floodwater in those areas has turned them into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, snakes, and other creatures. He said the youth belonging to those areas have lost their jobs as they could not attend to their duties. He said thousands of people, including small children, have been living a miserable life for the last two months. Now they face the threat of the spread of Coronavirus and other water-borne diseases including Dengue, Malaria, etc.,

Reddy said that no government official or public representative has even tried to help the residents of Osman Nagar. Despite its proximity to Hyderabad and the constituency (Maheshwaram) being represented by a minister, no steps were taken to help the affected families. He said that the conditions in Osman Nagar and surrounding areas have exposed the inefficiency of the TRS Government and also the lack of coordination among Municipal, Irrigation, Revenue, Energy and other relevant departments. “When the entire Telangana State celebrated Diwali, the residents of Osman Nagar and surrounding areas were undergoing a painful experience with no access even to safe drinking water,” he said.

The TPCC chief said when he enquired about the situation in Osman Nagar with the District Collector and other officials, he was told that they had already submitted a report to the State Government and they are waiting for funds.

It may be mentioned that Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with other senior leaders, had visited Osman Nagar and other affected areas on November 13 and interacted with the affected families.

He requested the Chief Minister to pay attention to the agony and pain being faced by the residents of Osman Nagar and take measures on a war footing basis to improve the situation. He asked the Chief Minister to order the conduct of the enumeration of damages in those areas and pay compensation of Rs. 1-5 lakh for each family. He said steps should be taken to find a permanent solution to the inundation of those areas in the future by removing encroachments. He demanded that the State Government conduct a medical camp in the area and permanently station a medical team till the situation becomes normal.
