“Wounded tiger is more dangerous than dead one”- Mamata Banerjee returns to campaign on wheelchair

With the West Bengal elections coming close, no politician is wasting any moment. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is back in the Kolkata rally, leading the way for her Trinamool party but this time on a wheelchair after she suffered the injuries recently.

The CM took off for her duties as the president of the party 4 days after bearing the incident at Nandigram. Reacting to questions of her return to the campaign despite the sustained injuries, Ms Banerjee said, Nihoto bagher theke ahoto bagh onek beshi bhoyonkor,” (a wounded tiger is far more dangerous than a murdered tiger) stressing that she would “never bow down to a conspiracy.”

She left for the Gandhi Statue situated at Kolkata’s Mayo Road crossing today from her Kalighat home with one leg in a cast. The party will be organizing a rally on Nandigram Martyr Day, TMC said. The day holds significance as 14 people were murdered during police firing in 2007 amidst the anti-land acquisition movement.

Contesting from Nandigram, Ms Banerjee will be standing opposite her former ally and cabinet minister Suvendu Adhikari. He recently changed his political stance and joined BJP.

The Sunday rally witnessed the CM say, “I am hurt and unwell, but my goal remains the same. My body is full of bruises. Doctors suggested I take rest for 15 days, but I will continue to roam around Bengal on a wheelchair. If I take rest, who will reach out to the people of Bengal?”

She posted a tweet this morning that read, “On this day, in 2007, innocent villagers were killed in firing at #Nandigram. Many bodies could not be found. It was a dark chapter in the history of the state. Heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives,” adding, “In memory of those who lost their lives in #Nandigram, we observe March 14 as #KrishakDibas every year and give away the #KrishakRatna awards. Farmers are our pride and our government is working for their all-round development.”

She also wrote, “As a mark of respect and encouraged by my brothers and sisters of Nandigram, I am contesting #BengalElection2021 as #AITCofficial candidate from this historic place. It is my great honour to be here and work along with members of Shaheed families against anti-Bengal forces.”

Further in the rally, she said, “I will travel all across Bengal with my broken leg. We will play. We will play with this broken leg. A conspiracy surrounds Bengal and we should defeat them.”

The Election Commission said Ms Banerjee was not attacked in Nandigram opposed to her claims of a “conspiracy” where she said 4 to 5 people had pushed her. The EC, with suggestions from observers, removed the DM and SP of East Midnapore and the senior police officer who had the prime duty of protecting Mamata Banerjee.
