26-Year-Old UP Woman Commits Suicide by Consuming ‘Sindoor’

Bhadohi: A 26-year-old woman allegedly took her own life after consuming “sindoor” (vermilion) when her husband wouldn’t take her along to Surat where he worked, police stated.

The Station officer (SO) of Suryava police headquarters, Pradeep Kumar, stated: “Vikas Bind, a resident of Kanpur village, married Saraswati Devi three years ago. Vikas used to work in Surat district of Gujarat and had come home during the lockdown.”

Kumar added: “Four days ago, he left for Surat. Saraswati wanted to accompany her husband, but Vikas insisted that she remained at home and looked after their two-and-half-year-old child.”

The SO said Saraswati consumed ‘sindoor‘ after Vikas left for Surat, yet it was not apparent the amount of the substance she had consumed.

The police officer said that as Saraswati’s condition deteriorated, she was admitted to a hospital where she died on Wednesday.

Sindoor‘ contains lead or mercury compounds and can be harmful.

In the interim, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and the issue was under investigation, police said.
