Driving Licenses to be issued without test; no more RTO rounds required

The Union Road and Transport Ministry has changed the requirements for obtaining a driver’s license. The new rules went into effect on July 1, 2022. People will no longer have to wait in long lines to go to the RTO and get their DL.

Drivers of two-wheelers and four-wheelers will no longer be required to visit the Regional Transportation Office (RTO) to obtain their driving license.

The Center has changed the rules for obtaining a driver’s license, where the driving test is no longer mandatory. This is a huge relief for the common person.

This work will now be carried out through the Driver Training Center run by the State Transport Authority or the Central Government.

The government has now granted recognized driver training centers the right to take the test for a driving license.

Process

Applicants for a driver’s license must enroll in one of these driver training centers and pass the test administered by them. The center will issue a certificate once the test has been passed. After obtaining the certificate, the candidate may apply for a driver’s license, which will be issued on the basis of the training certificate without the need for a test at the RTO.

It is worth noting that the dedicated training centers will be outfitted with simulators and driving test tracks.

These training facilities can provide training for light motor vehicles (LMV) and medium and heavy vehicles (HMV). The total training time for LMV will be 29 hours, which will be completed in four weeks.

Addresses in DL, like Aadhaar, can be changed while sitting at home.

Previously, an application to the Regional Transport Office was required to change the address on a driver’s license (RTO). However, there is no longer any need to go through such a lengthy procedure. There is also an easy way to accomplish this. The Government of India’s mParivahan app can be used for this. With this, the home address on the driver’s license will be changed while the driver is at home.
