GO 111 to be revoked in Telangana

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao announced that GO 111, which was issued in 1996 to prevent undue industrialization and heavy construction activities in 83 villages, as well as pollution of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, would be revoked soon.

In response to a question in the Assembly, the Chief Minister stated that the GO was no longer needed. It was issued to protect the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, which served the drinking water needs of the Greater Hyderabad region at the time.

However, the State government had now overcome the drinking water shortage that had affected the capital region, and adequate alternate water resources had been established.

Water supply was plentiful, with water being taken without difficulty through projects such as the Sunkishala Intake Project and Mallanna Sagar, with Hyderabad not experiencing water shortages for another 100 years. As a result, the GO could be revoked.

However, if the GO, which affected 83 villages and 1.32 lakh acres, was lifted all at once, there could be anarchy. As a result, the Municipal Administration Minister and officials were directed to address the issue in stages after developing master plans and green zones. According to the Chief Minister, an expert committee is also looking into the matter.

“The report of the expert committee is awaited. GO 111 will be lifted as soon as we receive that report,” he said.

What is GO 111?

The goal of GO 111, issued in 1996 by the then-AP government, was to protect Hyderabad’s drinking water sources, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar. The order, which applies to 84 villages, prohibits construction activity within a 10-kilometre radius of the two bodies of water.
