Hyderabad: Kamuni Cheruvu in the grip of land sharks and encroachers

There have been reports of land sharks and encroachers filling up Kamuni Cheruvu in Moosapet at night, building temporary rooms and selling them off and smiling away to riches.

Based on Google maps and old survey maps of Hyderabad, it was revealed that not only the full tank level but also a quarter of the lake and nalas leading in and out had been encroached upon.

The lake has been encroached upon several times in the last few days, according to officials. A complaint was filed to stop encroachments on a minimum of one acre of lake land, GHMC officials said.

Assistant executive engineer A Lakshminarayana of GHMC (lakes division) said they filed a complaint with Kukatpally police on November 7. “An FIR was registered and police arrested a truck driver for dumping debris,” he said.

He further said, “Overnight, they (encroachers) built small rooms. We are removing them and fencing the lake. Some of the encroachers of Raghavendranagar are claiming that the then collector in 1992 had issued them land pattas close to the lake. At least one acre of the lake land has been encroached.”

Despite the rise of boards like ‘plots for sale in Kamuni Cheruvu’, lake protection activists are concerned about the fate of one of the largest lakes in Kukatpally IDL. Save lakes activist Thakur Raj Kumar Singh said: “We have analyzed the maps and found that Raghavendra Colony has been eating into the lake over the years. Nearby Maisamma Cheruvu is also facing threats from the encroachers.”

“The encroachers and realty mafia have turned the lake into an illegal real estate venture,” Krishna Kiran Mandapaka, a local resident, said. Although several representations have been made highlighting the rampant encroachment on the lake, they have fallen on deaf ears.

“There should be intervention at the highest level to take strong action on the encroachers. Preventive measures must be taken to protect the lake from the land sharks,” Krishna Kiran said. However, Kukatpally police have not taken any action despite a pending FIR.

As of yet, none of the local leaders who are allegedly abetting the lake encroachments and people engaging lorry drivers to dump debris and build rooms has been booked. Kukatpally inspector T Narsinga Rao said: “Previously, there was an FIR and this is the second case regarding the lake encroachment. GHMC has to be active in demolishing the illegal structures in and around the lake.”
