Joe Biden Administration Withdraws Military Troops From Afghanistan

Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America recently announced that they will be withdrawing troops from Afghanistan before September 11, 2021. This move ends the longest war in American history.

US Troops To Begin Final Withdrawal From May 2021

As per the latest reports, Joe Biden announced that the United States will begin the final withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan on May 1, 2021. He said that along with the US troops, all the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) troops deployed by the allies and the operational partners will also withdraw their troops.

The troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan before September 11 which marks the 20th anniversary of the Al-Qaeda attacks on US soil.

“It is time to end America’s longest war. It is time for American troops to come home,” Biden said. He noted that they have achieved the counter-terrorism objectives in Afghanistan.

Biden further clarified that the withdrawal is not subject to any changes that may happen on the ground. He said that they cannot continue the cycle of extending and expanding their military presence in Afghanistan in the hopes to create ideal withdrawal conditions and have any different results.

He noted that he is the fourth President of the United States to preside over the presence of American troops in Afghanistan. So far they have had two republicans and two democrats. And he is clear that he does not want to pass on the responsibility to a fifth President.

US Promises To Continue To Support And Provide Assistance To Afghan Military 

The upcoming September 11 marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. The attacks were conducted by a terrorist group called Al-Qaeda and further led the US into a war with Afghanistan. Biden said that during the war 2,488 US military personnel were killed and 20,722 military personnel were wounded. It is the longest war in US history.

He further said that even though they are withdrawing the troops, they will continue to support the Afghan military and Afghan government. They will have no role in Afghanistan militarily. But they will continue their diplomatic and humanitarian work.

Meanwhile, he also spoke about the US support for the peace talks that are to be held between the Afghanistan government and Taliban. The peace talks will be facilitated by the United Nations.
