Male Covid 19 Patients More Likely To Have A Stroke; Study

As per the new US-based study the hospitals may not actually be that safe for the Covid 19 patients as they were believed to be. The new study claims that the Covid 19 patients in hospitals are at a higher risk of having a stroke as others with similar infections.

COVID 19 May Increase The Risk Of Strokes

As per a study presented at the International Stroke Conference 2021, claimed that the 1.4 percent of the Covid 19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry had a confirmed stroke diagnosis while they were in the hospital for the Covid 19 treatment.

Out of these, 52.6 percent experienced the ischemic stroke and 2.5 percent had the transient ischemic attack (TIA). Along with this, 45.2 percent experienced an unspecified type of stroke. The lead author of the study Saate S. Shakil from the University of Washington said that the findings suggest that Covid 19 may be related to being the root case of the strokes. But the exact mechanisms of it is yet to be known.

He said that given the current situation and as the pandemic continues, they have found that the coronavirus is not just related to respiratory illness but also to vascular disease. This may affect the functioning of other organs as well.

Covid 19 Induced Stroke Is Higher In Male

For the study, the team accessed the American Heart Association’s Covid 19 CVD Registry. It includes the data for more than 20,000 patients that have been hospitalised for the Covid 19 treatment all across the United States of America.

While analysing the data, the team also found that the ones who had had any type of stroke, they were more likely to be male in gender and older.  In fact, most of the patients who suffered through ischemic stroke were the ones with high blood pressure as compared to the ones who didn’t.

Shakil said that strokes in general tend to have devastating consequences on the patient’s body. Especially if they are already in recovery from the Covid 19 infection, the path becomes even more difficult to survive for the patients.

He said that for a patient who has had both stroke and Covid 19, it takes a significant toll on the patient’s health. This only makes it even more important to be able to curb the spread of Covid 19 infection through public health interventions and ample amounts of Covid 19 vaccines being distributed.
