Rescued sloth bears in Zoo Park back on their feet post treatment

Equipped with the quarantine block, the Nehru Zoological Park is now capable of providing more systematic treatment to the rescued animals in its facility and the same is yielding results as the pair of sloth bears, that were rescued recently, is gradually recuperating and in good shape again.

“The bear couple are healthy and are responding well to the treatment. They are taking their feed on time and are out of danger now. Since they are under close supervision, they have to remain in the quarantine block and for 45 days before the authorities take a call to shift them in an acclimatized location,” the official informed.

It is pertinent to mention here that a pair of sloth bears were brought to the Nehru Zoological Park on the intervening night of 21st December after being rescued from Bommanapally Village near Karimnagar and Warangal border. The rescue operation was done by the Warangal Zoo rescue team and was shifted to Zoo Park after they were tranquilized.

They are, the official said, very ferocious animals identically formidable than tigers and other big cats. Normally the sloth bears are found in southern states while black bears are common in the Himalayan region. These omnivores animals are solitary creatures and generally nocturnal. They grow up to 6 feet in length while males can weigh up to 310 pounds. When threatened they respond by standing on their hind legs and displaying their formidable foreclaws. “Sloth bears are considered vulnerable animals. They are threatened by habitat loss and are sometimes captured for use in performances or hunted because of their aggressive behavior especially when they resorted to destruction of crops,” he explained.

There are a total of 181 in Nehru Zoological park that makes this facility one of the biggest Zoological Park in the country spreads over an area of 380 acres on the bank of historic Mir Alam Lake. Recently a newly set up quarantine block also helped the officials to supervise, diagnose, and give treatment to the rescued animals.
