Telangana Power Distribution Companies Face Financial Crisis

The whitepaper on Telangana’s energy sector, delivered by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, throws light on the state’s power distribution companies (discoms)’ acute financial difficulties. The discoms are in a hazardous position, with a whopping debt of Rs 81,516 crore and accumulated losses of Rs 62,461 crore.

Several causes have contributed to the financial difficulties, with a substantial amount of the debt, Rs 30,406 crore, obtained as working capital mostly to settle power prices. Despite this, the discoms owe Rs 28,673 crore in generation and transmission charges.

The problem is aggravated further by the government’s failure to pay power bills for its own ministries, resulting in dues of Rs 28,842 crore. This contains a significant amount owing by lift irrigation projects.

The whitepaper emphasizes the important issue of discoms relying on recurring borrowings to maintain power supply, trapping them in unsustainable debt. The government’s refusal to satisfy its financial promises and dues to the power sector has greatly contributed to the current problem. Discoms are failing to pay their operational obligations due to outstanding debt and financial irresponsibility.

Despite these problems, the Telangana Congress government has stated its commitment to provide quality and reliable power to the people. The whitepaper intends to handle the power sector’s financial issue in a transparent and responsible manner. It underlines the need of smart financial management while admitting past failures and outlines the government’s commitment to providing sustainable and efficient power distribution to Telangana residents. The paper highlights the government’s resolve to address financial challenges in the power sector and work toward a more resilient and stable energy landscape for the state.
