13 junctions to be developed in Hyderabad by GHMC

There is more to roads than just vehicles zooming by. Road infrastructure belongs to everyone, even pedestrians.

Taking into account pedestrians’ right to walk, the city’s municipal administration has conceptualized road infrastructure including junctions that are mostly used by pedestrians to cross the streets.

In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is developing 13 junctions to ensure smooth vehicular traffic flow and pedestrian comfort at the same time. The civic body is also adding a touch of aesthetics to the development with colorful installations.

KT Rama Rao, Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, reviewed infrastructure projects undertaken by the department on Tuesday and instructed officials to develop junctions while completing road-related projects, including the restoration of main roads.

Taking to Twitter, Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar said the intersection improvement works enhance pedestrian safety as well as city beauty. He tweeted: Minister @KTRTRS reviewed improvement of traffic junctions in @GHMCOnline which in addition to pedestrian safety will add to aesthetics proposed designs at Narayanguda, Nagarjunacircle, IDPL & Sangeet theatre xing a total of 13 such junctions by @janausp @Janaagraha1.

As part of the Junction Improvement Programme, widening, construction of traffic islands, installation of bollards, and development of central medians, dividers, and free lefts will be undertaken. Inside traffic islands, greenery will be developed and sculptures will be installed to further enhance these pedestrian-friendly facilities.

Along with the Junction Improvement Programme, the GHMC plans to install 94 Pelican signals with push-button pedestrian crossings. At strategic locations such as hospitals, colleges, schools, and areas with high pedestrian traffic, they will be installed.

During the process of improving junctions, we will come up with unique and innovative solutions and develop the infrastructure. The goal is to provide more services for fewer investments, a GHMC official said.

Foot-over bridges (FoBs) are also being constructed throughout the city to improve pedestrian safety. Several FoBs are equipped with lifts and escalators for senior citizens.
