23 IITs working to improve interface between industries and institutes: Prof BS Murty

Prof BS Murty, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H), stated that 23 Indian Institutes of Technology in India were working to improve the interface between industries and the institutes. Unlike foreign institutes such as MIT, where the majority of investments come from industry, Murty believes there is little relationship between industry and institutes in India.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an exhibition of innovations developed by faculty and students of IIT-H at the campus in Kandi of Sangareddy district on Thursday, the Director stated that only 10% of investment in IITs in India comes from industry, whereas foreign institutes receive more than 33% of investment from industry.

He stated that in order to improve the relationship, the 23 IIT managements formed a steering committee that decided to put on an exhibition of IITians’ innovations. The event was christened as the IIvenTiv Technologies Exhibition.

Prof Murty stated that the steering committee, led by IIT-Madras Chairman Pawan Goenka and IIT-H Chairman BVR Mohan Reddy, had chosen 75 to 80 innovations from the 23 institutes to be displayed at IIT-Delhi on October 14 and 15. According to the Director, six such innovations were chosen from IIT-Hyderabad as well.

Prof Murty stated that because the innovation ideas required funding and machinery for upscaling production, they would display the innovations that were in the final stages of research and could be produced on a large scale.

Prof Murty stated that they were sending their students to industry for six months during the six semesters of B-Tech in order to improve their understanding of the industry. He stated that the outcome was tremendous, as IIT-Hians were able to establish 100 startups over the last decade, creating 1,000 jobs. He also stated that the Startups could receive Rs 650 crore in investment. Prof Murty believes that better industry-institute relationships can vastly improve it in the coming years.

The Director stated that the B-Tech (Integrated Circuit Design and Technology) course would begin in October with a class size of 30 students. He stated that IIT-H is the first institute in India to offer such a course.

Since the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is also striving to encourage technical institutes in India to launch the course, the Director stated that the AICTE has adopted the same curriculum that IIT-H designed for the course and that the rest of the institutes will follow.
