300 new bridges to be built by Telangana govt across the State

To improve connectivity, the Roads and Buildings Department will build approximately 300 new bridges on State roads.

Since several roads and culverts in the state were severely damaged by heavy rains and floods over the last two years, officials recently submitted a report to the government requesting funds to repair roads, causeways, culverts, and bridges. R&B officials have identified 300 locations on various roads throughout the state for new bridge construction.

In the last two years, floods have damaged 133 bridges, and there are 167 places where rivers flow but there are no bridges.

According to R&B officials, after conducting an extensive survey of the State roads, the department urged the government to immediately begin constructing at least 150 new bridges on a war footing, or the roads would suffer severe damage during the next monsoon. Officials said that all new bridges would be built high off the ground and with lengths ranging from 10 to 50 metres to allow water to pass underneath safely during heavy rains and floods.

The State government has already issued orders releasing Rs 2,500 crore for the repair of roads as well as the construction of bridges and culverts damaged by rains in the State. The government has requested that the R&B department finalise tenders for the repair of roads and construction of culverts at the earliest.

The sanctioned amount includes Rs 1,865 crore for road repairs and Rs 635 crore for bridge and culvert construction.

Many culverts were found damaged on roads in Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal, Khammam, Medak, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Rangareddy (Rural) circles, according to officials.

Officials have said that of the total 27,737.21 km-network of R&B roads, 1,675 km was damaged at 664 places due to rain. A total of 1,087 culverts and roads under the National Highways Authority of India were also damaged due to rain.
