Actor Mandira Bedi’s husband filmmaker Raj Kaushal dies at 49

Actress Mandira Bedi’s husband, Raj Kaushal, died of a massive heart attack in Mumbai in the wee hours today. He was a filmmaker, writer, and director who had started as a copywriter. He passed away at 4.30 am on Wednesday morning following the heart attack. Mr Kaushal had died before his family could bring him medical aid, actor Rohit Roy said, confirming the news.  

The funeral took place in Mumbai’s Shivaji Ground on Wednesday afternoon amongst the presence of close family members and friends from the TV industry. Paying their last respects to Mr Kaushal were actors Ronit Roy, brother Rohit Roy, Ashish Choudhary, Samir Soni and others.  

Mr Kaushal, 49, is survived by his wife, Ms Bedi, 49, whom he married in the year 1999. The couple welcomed their son Vir in 2011 and adopted 4-year-old Tara in 2020. They had supposedly spent their weekend with friends, including cricketer Zaheer Khan and wife Sagarika Ghatge, Ashish Chaudhary, Neha Dhupia and her husband Angad Bedi.

Dozens of the TV industry celebrities penned down emotional notes on the filmmaker’s death. Rohit Roy took to social media and posted saying, “And just like that, he’s gone, even without saying good bye. Too numb with grief and shock to react. This is not fair, just not fair.” 

Reminiscing how Mr Kaushal believed in him for composing the music of his first film, music director-singer Vishal Dadlani wrote, “The first person to trust me with making music for a film, @rajkaushal created so many careers with, #PyaarMeinKabhiKabhi. Above that, he always stood with his friends. @mandirabedi, I don’t know what to say. Can’t imagine how you and the kids are feeling right now. I’m so sorry.” 

The movie My Brother Nikhil’s director Onir tweeted saying, “Gone too soon. We lost Filmmaker and Producer @rajkaushal1 this morning. Very Sad….One of those few who believed in our vision and supported us. Prayers for his soul.” 

Posting a picture from their recent meet, Neha Dhupia called Ms Bedi a “strong” woman. She wrote on Instagram, “Can’t believe you are not with us anymore. My heart belongs to Vir and Tara. I’m shaken up and in shock and disbelief as I write this.” 

Anupam Kher, Sudhir Mishra, Minnisha Lamba, R Madhavan, Arshad Warsi, and Manoj Bajpayee were among the many people who shared their condolences.  

“Deeply saddened & shocked to know about the sudden demise of #RajKaushal!…. Sorry dearest @mandybedi & family for your irreparable loss. #OmShanti,” actor Anupam Kher wrote while sharing the memories of working with Mr Kaushal. 

Actor Divya Dutta expressed her disbelief over the unfortunate incident. “What! Omg! No! Gone too soon Raj!” her tweet read. 

Mr Kaushal had started an advertising firm in 1998 and have directed more than 800 commercial ads. He has 3 films to his name- Shaadi ka Ladoo, Anthony Kaun Hai and Pyaar Mein Kabhie Kabhie.
