Agriculture Minister asks officials to encourage onion cultivation

Hyderabad: Keeping the soaring prices of onions in the State in mind, the Agriculture Minister of the State S Niranjan Reddy today instructed officials concerned to encourage onion cultivation and vegetables in summer through subsidy in pandals.

The minister also asked the officials to give subsidy for vegetable cultivation and alternative crops to benefit farmers. At a review meeting, the minister said that the farmers must grow vegetables in the Summer season and get benefits.  He asked the officials to make surprise visits to ensure cotton procured completely from the farmers. He also asked them to support the farmers to go in for vegetable crops.

He warned the officials of serious action if any irregularities were found in the cotton purchase or giving support to farmers through subsidy.  He said that 90 percent subsidy will be offered for pandal cultivation. A subsidy is offered this from half screen to one acre the minister said.

He further asked the officials to create awareness on the use of urea and fertilizers for crops.  Only 40 kg urea can be used for one-acre paddy cultivation he added.

Niranjan Reddy said that awareness is created among farmers on alternative crops, onions, and vegetables.  The minister asked the officials to see that green gram crops grown besides awareness on kitchen gardens.
