Alcohol addict kills wife for denying money to buy liquor in UP

Farrukhabad (Uttar Pradesh): Raged after not getting the money to buy liquor, from his wife, a UP man killed her and fled the scene.

The incident occurred in the Bamruliya village in the Farrukhabad district on Thursday. A case has been registered with the Nawabganj police station and a hunt has been launched to arrest the accused.

According to the police, Prashant was married to Lakshmi Devi, 26, for six years and they have a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.

The Central government on May 1st allowed the sale of alcohol in red, green, and orange zones with certain restrictions after 42 days of lockdown and closed liquor stores. This has reignited the fuel for the alcoholics waiting to get hold of liquor since all these days. Although it has helped generate a lot of revenue for the state governments, liquor induced crimes have increased since lifting the ban on alcohol sales.

“Prashant is a liquor addict. He would usually beat his wife in an inebriated condition. Prashant would frequently demand money from his wife for liquor. This time when she refused to give him money, he hit her with a wooden stick till she fainted and then escaped with her gold earrings, Lakshmi bled profusely and succumbed to her injuries,” said Station House Officer (SHO) Rakesh Kumar Sharma.

The victim’s parents have lodged a complaint at the Nawabganj police station. The children were taken by the maternal grandparents as they were left shocked and scarred from the murder. “We have booked Prashant under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. Raids are on to arrest him,” the SHO said.

There were reports of another UP man killing his pregnant wife with a sharp weapon in front of their 4-year-old son when she refused to give him money to buy liquor. This led to the boy run away from the house and hid in the bushes and was found after 4 hours by police officials and it was he who narrated the entire incident to the police.

Such crimes are on the rise and often involve liquor and money. The lockdown has further increased it as the liquor shops have opened but many men do not have the finances to buy it which may lead to such crimes.
