All Schools & Colleges Closed in Karnataka for 3 Days Due to Hijab Row

All schools and colleges in Karnataka will be closed for the next three days due to a dispute which was caused by students. Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai has ordered all high schools and colleges to remain closed in order to maintain peace and harmony. The Karnataka High Court is hearing petitions from five women from a Udupi government college challenging hijab restrictions.

The high court, which heard the case today, will hear it again tomorrow. The court also asked the general public and the students to keep the peace. This court has complete faith in the wisdom and virtue of the general public, and it hopes that this is put into practice, Justice Dixit Krishna Shripad said.

The Chief Minister tweeted shortly before the court proceedings ended today, “I appeal to all students, teachers, and school and college administration, as well as the people of Karnataka, to maintain peace and harmony. I have ordered that all high schools and colleges be closed for the next three days. All parties involved are asked to work together.”

The hijab protests began last month at the Government Girls PU College in Udupi when six students claimed they were barred from class because they insisted on wearing the hijab. Right-wing groups in Udupi and Chikkamagaluru were outraged when Muslim girls wore the hijab to school.

Last Friday and Saturday, a group of students dressed in saffron scarves marched to their college.

Today’s protests erupted after groups of protesters threw stones at each other and students at a college raised a saffron flag.

A Muslim girl stood her ground at a college in Mandya as a swarm of saffron scarf-wearing boys heckled her and chanted “Jai Shri Ram.” “Allah hu Akbar!” she yelled back at them.

According to officials, college rules allow the students to wear the hijab in class but not during lessons.

AragaJnanendra, Karnataka’s Home Minister, has stated that children should “neither wear the hijab nor saffron scarves” to school.
