Another GHMC ‘waste-to-energy’ plant to be built in Dundigal soon

As per the latest reports, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to build a new ‘waste to energy’ waste management plant in Dundigal.

Due to being a new source of electricity, it is increasing the number of such plants in the city. According to GHMC officials, the ‘Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM)’ project generates 19.8 MW at the Jawahar Nagar dump yard.

Garbage is collected from households and transported to transfer stations before being disposed of in the yard. Waste is separated and processed to generate electricity. It necessitates 1,200-1,500 tonnes of waste per day. They stated that from August 2020 to November 2021, 5.4 lakh MT of refuse-derived fuel waste was used to generate 185 MW.

Every day, the surrounding 17 municipalities and corporations dump a total of 7,000 tonnes of waste at the yard, along with over 6,500 tonnes of garbage dumped by GHMC. The treatment storage and disposal facility at Dundigal is being constructed.

It will go into production in September 2022. The waste-to-energy project, however, will be promoted as the city’s waste management plants expand.

GHMC plans to increase the capacity of WtE plant in Jawaharnagar

The 19.8 MW Waste to Energy (WtE) plant in Jawaharnagar will soon be expanded to 48 MW, not only increasing the plant’s capacity to produce more electricity but also scientifically disposing of more municipal waste in the city.

The Jawaharnagar plant, which opened in August 2020, consumes approximately 1200 tonnes per day (TPD) of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). As of November 2021, 185 million units of electricity were generated by consuming 5.4 lakh tonnes of RDF since the plant was established. Hyderabad Integrated MSW Ltd operates the plant as part of the GHMC’s Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM) Project.
