Assam govt demolish Madrasa over alleged links to terror outfits

In an attempt to foil the alleged terrorist activities being carried out from the Madrasas in the state, the Assam government demolished a private Madrasa on Wednesday.

The Bongaigaon district administration demolished Markazul Ma’arif-u-Kariyana Madrassa at Kabaitari in the Jogighopa area of the district this morning.

The demolition drive was conducted by eight bulldozers in the presence of many police officers.

On Tuesday, SP Bongaigaon, Swapnaneel Deka, informed the Madrasa authority of the demolition. Nearly 200 students were sent home, while a few who remained on the Madrasa grounds were relocated to nearby institutions before the demolition began.

A teacher at this madrasa, Hafizur Rahman, was arrested on August 26 based on information provided by two imams earlier nabbed in Goalpara.

Rahman and two imams are suspected of having links with Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

“During our search of the madrasa, we found some incriminating documents,” Deka said.

Upon being asked about the reasons behind the demolition, the police officer explained that the madrasa was built illegally and that the necessary permissions for the building were not obtained.

It was demolished in accordance with the Disaster Management Act, he explained.

Assam police have arrested around 40 people in the last five months for alleged connections with Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

Islamic teachers being monitored

Assam Chief Minister reiterated that Islamic teachers coming into the state will be closely monitored and that the state would build a portal to capture their details.

Police will verify the person, and then he will be able to carry out his religious teaching in the Madrassas, he said, adding that Assam Muslims have been working with the government on this.

Assam currently has no government-run madrassas because they were recently converted into regular schools.

Individual or privately run madrassas, on the other hand, continue to exist.
