Bangladesh Records 39 Percent Increase In Remittances During 2020-21 Fiscal Year

In the past 10 months, Bangladesh’s remittances have hit a new all-time high. In the current fiscal year from 2020-21 which is ending in June, the remittances has reached over $20 billion.

Bangladesh Bank Confirm 39 Percent in Remittances

As per the latest reports, Bangladesh Bank released data on Sunday and confirmed that the remittances received have been increased by 39 percent in the period of July-April of 2020-21 fiscal year. With the last month’s heft inflows, the amount has reached to $20,672 million.

Bangladeshi expatriates sent home $2.07 billion in April. It is the highest monthly amount thus far, the BB data showed. This amount has also increased by 89 percent from $1.09 billion. The Bangladeshis within the fiscal year 2019-2020 remitted home around $18.20 billion which is the previous highest remittances in a single year.

Last year, the BB officials said that Bangladesh received huge remittances from millions of Bangladeshis across the world ahead of the biggest Muslim festival Eid which will be celebrated in the South Asian nation on or around May 13.

Bangladesh Extends Nationwide Lockdown

Bangladesh announced on Monday that the nationwide lockdown has now been extended until May 16 amidst the second wave of Coronavirus. The first lockdown was imposed on April 5 and was extended to April 28 and then to May 5.

During the lockdown, public transport has been suspended and the markets are being shut. Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarful Islam announced the extension of the lockdown. He informed that inter-state buses and transport will remain suspended until the lockdown period. However, intercity buses will be operational with mandatory following of the Covid 19 safety guidelines.

He further said, in the meantime, the government will closely monitor market areas and malls to ensure that the Covid 19 safety protocols are being followed. However, if any shop is seen not following the same, it will be shut down.

In the past 24 hours, Bangladesh announced the deaths of 65 deaths due to Covid 19 with at least 1739 Covid cases.
