Booking a cab to the old city a big challenge

Securing a cab from Hyderabad Airport to the Old City has become an increasingly challenging task, with cab drivers citing low fares and passenger demands as the main reasons for declining service. When attempting to book a cab to Talab Katta, a frustrated customer named Fahimuddin (Name changed) shared his experience, stating, “It was incredibly difficult to find a ride to Talabkatta, where I reside. Many cab drivers canceled on me after learning the destination and the associated fare.”

Addressing the issue of cab denials to Old City residents, Shaik, the founder and President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, explained, “The lanes and roads in the Old City are narrow, which can result in damage to the cab, leading to repercussions from the vehicle owners. The fare from the airport to the Old City is only around Rs 300-400, which is a more cost-effective option compared to auto-rickshaws and bikes.”

Another significant factor contributing to the reluctance of cab drivers to accept rides to the Old City is the recent festivals and the resulting traffic congestion. Shaik added, “Most passengers insist on being dropped off at their doorstep, which can be logistically challenging.”

Despite the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union’s efforts to advocate for fairer fares through initiatives like the “Low Fare- No Air” demonstrations, substantial changes in fare structures have not been implemented, except for minor adjustments in the days following such demonstrations.

Speaking on this issue, Saleem, a cab driver, commented, “Certain taxi services that offer carpooling options can operate at such low fares. However, carpooling may not be the safest choice, as drivers might drop passengers off at random locations, posing risks to both drivers and passengers.”

Mukesh, another cab driver, emphasized, “Another key reason for denying rides to the Old City is the unreliable functionality of route maps. Passengers often request routes that are impossible to navigate, even for auto-rickshaws.”

In conclusion, securing a cab to the Old City from Hyderabad Airport has become a challenge due to various factors, including low fares, traffic congestion, and passenger demands. Finding a solution that addresses these concerns while ensuring the safety and convenience of both passengers and drivers remains a complex issue that requires further attention and cooperation from all stakeholders involved.
