Brand new Punjagutta FoB now open for public

Public access has now been granted for the much-anticipated Foot over Bridge (FoB) near the Hyderabad Central Mall at Punjagutta junction, one of the busiest traffic junctions in the city.

Constructed at a cost of Rs.5 crore, the posh FoN was inaugurated on Wednesday by Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi. Among those in attendance were Kharatabad MLA Danam Nagender and others.

It was built by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to facilitate safe pedestrian crossings near Punjagutta.

Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar announced that six FOBs would be inaugurated within six weeks on Twitter.

He said: Stylish, state of art Foot over Bridge (FoB) at #Hyderabad central Mall, Punjagutta being inaugurated today by @GHMCOnline Mayor @GadwalvijayaTRS garu. 6 more FoBs getting ready & will be operational in the next 4-6 weeks @KTRTRS @YadavTalasani.

After the city and Cyberabad police noticed the accident cases, they marked some junctions as accident-prone zones, and they requested the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to construct FoBs at some main junctions in the city.

The construction of 22 FoBs has been requested. Out of 22, five have been completed: near Hyderabad Central in Punjagutta, St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad, Neredmet bus stop, Swapna Theatre in Rajendra Nagar, and NSSK High School in Ferozguda.

The construction of FoBs in the city has cost about 16 crore rupees. Besides the installation of lifts and escalators, walkways, staircases, mild steel railings, crash barriers, and flooring were also completed for these five FOBs.

The New Indian Express (TNIE) quoted GHMC engineer-in-chief Mohd Ziauddin as saying, “The FoBs on routes with heavy traffic would help pedestrians circumvent the streets completely while also assisting commuters, especially in areas with busy markets and malls.”

Pedestrians and motorists will have fewer conflicts on busy roads because of the FoBs, saving lives and reducing accident rates. To build these skywalks, the state government did not enter into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement.
