Brazil judge orders Apple to pay $1,000 for selling iPhone without charger

It was a bold decision for Apple to eliminate the charger from the iPhone box. Apple faced harsh criticism for the controversial move it made but stood by its decision as part of the company’s efforts to minimize the impact of electronics on the environment. Even now, this decision is taking a toll on Apple.

Apple has been ordered to compensate a Brazilian customer about $1,000 for not shipping a charger in Iphone box.

The judge, Vanderlei Caires Pinheiro, ruled the practice to be a “tie sale” or a situation involving a company requiring a customer to purchase two of its products for one of them to work, as per the court documents seen by Insider.

According to the court documents, Apple’s defence was that each iPhone comes with a USB-C to Lightning cable that lets consumers charge their phones using power adaptors they can buy from other companies.

However, the judge rejected the argument, stating that the cable was not compatible with wall adapters that don’t have a USB-C port, for which the Apple charger was designed.

It was also noted that Apple’s explanation for stopping the supply of power adapters was a concern for the environment and a shortage of accessory supplies. As a response, Pinheiro said Apple continues to manufacture its power adapters and sells them separately.

This is not even the first time Apple has been penalized for removing the iPhone charger.

Apple had announced it would no longer provide power adapters with the iPhone 12 in 2020, which the Brazilian government had deemed abusive. A Brazilian outlet reported that the government fined Apple $2 million for the practice in 2021, saying the tech giant had not demonstrated the “environmental gain” it advertised.
