BRS Accuses Congress of Funding Telangana Elections from Karnataka

The BRS, Telangana’s ruling party, has claimed that the Congress is seeking to funnel money from Karnataka into the Telangana Assembly elections. These allegations surfaced in the aftermath of recent Income Tax (I-T) raids in Karnataka, which allegedly unearthed Rs 42 crore in cash.

Charges of Illegal Influence

T. Harish Rao, Minister for Finance and a BRS leader, has claimed that the Congress planned to invest Rs 1,500 crore in Telangana elections. According to Rao, this money will be obtained through collecting commissions from builders and gold dealers in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The purported goal of this effort is to sway Telangana voters by utilizing illicit donations from Karnataka.

Commission Rates Changing
Rao also mentioned a substantial hike in commission fees. He stated that during the BJP’s tenure in Karnataka, the commission received from contractors was 40%. According to his statements, this percentage has climbed to 50% since the Congress took power.

Previous Complaints

On September 30, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao said that the Congress administration in Karnataka was imposing a “political election tax” on Bengaluru builders to support the party’s activities in Telangana. According to his claims, this “political election tax” of Rs 500 per square foot was charged on builders in order to fund the Telangana Congress.

Context of the Election
These claims come as the 119-member Telangana Assembly prepares for elections on November 30. The leaders of the Congress party have expressed optimism that they will be able to replicate their success in Karnataka and maybe gain momentum in Telangana.

As the campaign heats up, charges of money laundering across states push the topic of financial influence in politics to the forefront.
