Call for Recognition and Support: Telangana Ashoorkhanas Seek State-Level Status for Muharram Peerla Panduga

An organisation that represents Telangana’s Ashoorkhanas (locations of mourning during Muharram) has asked CMuharram Peerla Panduga (Azadari) as a state-level initiative. They drew reference to CM KCR’s 2014 pledge to mark Muharram Peehief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao to recognise rla Panduga in the same manner as the Hindu holiday Bathukamma Panduga.

Additionally, the organisation asked the state government for a budgetary allocation of Rs 100 crore for the upkeep and restoration of Ashoorkhanas throughout the state. Many Hindus in Telangana also observe Muharram Peerla Panduga, which is largely commemorated by the Shia Muslim community globally.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, during which Shia Muslims observe a period of mourning for two months and eight days. The first 10 days of the month hold significance for both Shias and Hindus, who follow different customs and rituals to mourn the death of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
