Charminar pedestrianisation project revival to be done with AKTC, ThinkCity

As announced by MA&UD special chief secretary Arvind Kumar, the revival of the Charminar pedestrianisation project will be done with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and ThinkCity.

He also said that a meeting was held with the general manager of AKTC, Luis Monreal, on Friday. In Kumar’s view, the economic integration of stakeholders and hawkers is integral.

Arvind Kumar discussed the possibility of collaborating with the Telangana government to envision the prestigious project with Luis Monreal, Director General of AKTC, Ratish Nanda, Chief Executive of AKTC, and Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director of Think City.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) rejected the previous proposals as impractical last year. Since then, the project has been shelved.

Charminar Pedestrianisation Project

As part of the development of the iconic monument and its surroundings, the state government launched a pedestrian corridor project.

A project worth Rs. 60.02 crores is being implemented in collaboration with two government departments. The GHMC spends Rs. 11.2 8 crores on developing six surrounding areas, while the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority spends Rs. 48.74 crores on seven development projects.

The busy shopping areas of Lal Bazar are being cleared of traffic obstacles. It’s been planned to renovate four iconic archways around Charminar in order to restore them to their former glory. Chudi Bazar, Murgi Chowk, and Clock Tower are also getting a makeover.

The Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP) was initiated by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 1998, during the government of the Telugu Desam Party. In its place, the GHMC will now implement the ‘Charminar Historical Precinct Revitalisation Plan.’

For years, the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project has been a liability for GHMC due to its inability to fully implement. The cobblestone pathways that surround the monument are the only visible development.
