China Sets Up Emergency Committee To Help 14 Migrating Elephants; 150,000 Residents Evacuated

With China’s surging Covid 19 cases, a new case of evacuation has come up. As per the authorities in China’s Yunnan province, they have so far evacuated more than 150,000 residents to avoid getting in contact with the elephants as they head to the South.

Around 14 Asian Elephants Are Approaching Their Traditional Habitat

As per the latest reports, around a herd of 14 wild Asian elephants are approaching their traditional habitat in the South after migrating around the area for nearly a year and a half. Wan Yong, head of the headquarters in charge of monitoring the migrating elephants released a statement at the press conference on Monday night.

He revealed that the herd had already crossed the Yuanjiang River on Sunday at about 8pm. They got the information from the artificial guidance and have already continued to head to the south.

He further said that they have deployed over 25,000 police officers and staff. Along with a large number of vehicles and drones to monitor the situation and further guide the migrating elephants.

Meanwhile, around 180 tonnes of food have already been provided to the elephants throughout their migration. Wan informed that the elephants are in stable condition.

Committee To Ensure Safe Return Of The Elephants

To ensure the safe returning of the elephants, an emergency committee had set up to handle the elephants. They used electrics fences and bait to ensure that the elephants took to the correct route to head home.

A member of the committee, Yang Yingyong said that the migration route for the elephants was “scientifically planned”. The herd had left their original habitat in a nature reserve in the Southern Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
Wild Asian elephants are currently under A-level state protection of the Chinese authorities.
